Burnish Armors are mechanical, protective plates worn by Burnish, specifically Mad Burnish members. Only the leaders of Mad Burnish have been shown adorning them. On rare occasions, they may also be used atop other mechs.

Appearance[]

Lio[]

The armor he creates is jet black, sleek, and tall, with stilted blade-like legs with whitened segments. His helmet's visor resembles jagged pointed teeth and ends in two horn-like flairs. In an attempt to appear more intimidating, the armor is much taller and well built looking than he actually is. This later results in the shock of Galo, who mistook him for being older due to Ignis.

Gueira[]

With a bull-like appearance, his figure features a large chest with enormous pecs, several red and pink segments, and two horns for the helmet. Said helmet features a green visor resembling teeth. His hands and feet are clawed while his arms feature six spikes.

Meis[]

When in his Burnish armor, Meis' features an insect-like appearance and blue segments. His hands are replaced with knife-like claws. The shoulders of his armor have two extensions resembling antennas. Meis' helmet features a yellow teeth visor and one blue horn.

History[]

Galo-hen[]

During the events of Galo-hen and Lio-hen, an armored Gueira and Meis are shown burning down a nearby Foresight Pharmaceutical. They then encounter Burning Rescue and later take an unconscious Thyma away. Reuniting with their fellow Burnish, Freeze Force tracks the group down. Thus, the duo attempt to distract them to no avail. Lio then intervenes, saving Mad Burnish.

Galo and Lio fight

The trio reappear in Promare, once again adorning sleek black armor. Aiming to get arrested, Lio and his generals once again attack a local pharmaceutical. However, Burning Rescue intervenes. Gueira and Meis briefly fight against a struggling Galo. However, the latter pulls out his trump card: his Matoi Tech. With an increased speed, the young rookie takes down the duo, leaving Lio. Another fight breaks out.

Throughout their duel, Galo and Lio are evenly matched and using any means possible to win. As the duo fight amongst the flames, Galo eventually shoots at Lio's mask, breaking it in half. Galo is left shocked. This results in Lio taking the opportunity to remove Galo of all his armor. As the firefighter is left cornered, the rest of his team suddenly appear, finally taking down Lio.

Later on at Fennel Volcano, Freeze Force once again tracks down several Burnish and raids the hideout. Mad Burnish then appears. The trio attempt to fight off the police force. With the usage of a mole however, Lio is left paralyzed and his armor completely broken. This results in Gueira and Meis sacrificing themselves to launch Lio away. In the aftermath, the duo are left frozen and promptly taken away.

While not akin to previous Burnish armors where they are purely one material, Lio creates a brand new appearance for Deus X Machina in the form of Lio de Galon. Biar comments that its flame is more pure than the promatech engine's.

Abilities[]

  • Burnish abilities: As these are Burnish armors, their wearers naturally share the same abilities as other Burnish. These include pyrokinesis, creating weapons and bikes, and resistance to heat. They are stated to be far more powerful though.
  • Protection: As their main function is to protect, they naturally act as a shield for most attacks. Weapons such as Freeze Force's absolute zero bullet or Galo's arsenal, on the other hand, have been shown to shatter them.
  • Increased size: All known armors tower over most people in both height and mass.

Trivia[]

  • According to staff, the amount of horns on the helmet is an indication of a Burnish's power. For example, Lio has three, outnumbering Gueira and Meis[1].

Intertextuality and References[]

  • They bare a similar appearance to the EVA mechas in Neon Genesis Evangelion. Some staff members were previously a part of Gainax, making this potentially intentional.
  • On Lio's armor is six triangles pointing inward in a circle. This is meant to reference a symbol used by samurai, where said symbol is based on the six coins required to pass the Sanzu River.
    • The Sanzu River is a concept in Japanese Buddhism, akin to the Greek Styx, where a toll of six coins must be paid to pass through the river. It was used to symbolize the samurai being afraid to die, but their family crest of six coins would allow them to cross over. They thus accepted their deaths. Another media that uses this is in the 1995 film adaption of Ghost in the Shell with Major's neck area.

Miscellaneous[]

  • In Super Mecha Champions, Lio’s armor was made into a pilot skin for Cyrus. To compensate for other player models, it was shortened to be around 7’0 ft tall including the horns. When not including them, the armor is about 6’3 ft. Meanwhile, the actual film has the armor be around the size of Galo’s Matoi Tech.
