After that whole speech, that all you got?

—Gueira, Foresight Pharmaceutical

Gueira (ゲーラ) is a leading general of Mad Burnish in Promare along with his comrades Lio and Meis. Meis and him knew each other before the events of Lio-hen.

Portrayal: Nobuyuki Hiyama

Personality[]

Similar to his Burnish armor appearance, Gueira has a fiery and impulsive personality where he has a tendency to voice his opinions and emotions outwardly. This occasionally gets him in trouble. Despite this, he appears to care deeply for his fellow Burnish as evidenced by his and Meis' rescue of Thyma.

Like his fellow Mad Burnish, he finds those above such as the Foresight Foundation to only mistreat them. Thus, he and his cooperatives have a tendency to go after them alongside rescue others during drives. He, like Meis, is at least somewhat self-sacrificing and may put himself in danger for Lio's sake when the situation calls for it.

Appearance[]

Gueria is a tall, slender, young man with messy red hair. His eyes match said hair color. His complexion is that of a slight tan. He has a tattoo near his left shoulder reading "雷刃" (Lightning Blade). He wears a light blue shirt with a black leather jacket and pants with knee pads held up with a white studded belt. His boots are also black, and slightly resemble Lio's boots.

When adorned in his Mad Burnish armor, he posses a larger, more muscular and even monstrous appearance which features a large chest with enormous pecs, several red and pink segments, and two horns. Like Meis and Lio's armor, the helmet features teeth. Said teeth are of a green shade.

History[]

Lio-hen[]

During the events of the prologues, Gueira and Meis lead the then unruly Mad Burnish. The short opens with the gang embarking a raid on Promepolis, rampaging through the streets on motorcycles and destroying the automated fire hydrants. However, very quickly, they notice that the Burning Rescue is on route to stop their assault. In response, Gueira and Meis elect to order the rest of the team to retreat, themselves choosing to stay and toy with the firefighters. When the duo stops causing havoc, they take a Burnish Thyma with them.

Arriving where their fellow Burnish are, Thyma briefly rejects what she has become until Gueira and Meis calm her down. They affirm to her that all their turnings were of chance and that, if she so wished, she could join Mad Burnish. Freeze Force then enters the scene. The duo attempt to drive away and distract the enforcement group, however this still ends with several non-Mad Burnish captured. Gueira and Meis are almost caught themselves until an arrow is shot.

Lio Fotia intervenes, fighting off Vulcan and his men as well as rescuing several Mad Burnish members. Despite this, Lio refuses to kill, reverting to escape instead. Gueira and Meis question him on this. Lio claims that, if they were to purposefully kill any non-Burnish enforcement, this would result in harsher treatment towards the Burnish. He instead offers that they isolate themselves in a faraway place where none can find them. After they introduce themselves, Lio is assigned as Mad Burnish's leader.

Promare[]

Before heading to a local Foresight Pharmaceutical, Gueira, Lio and Meis devise a plan in which the three of them are to be captured by Freeze Force. They will then free any prisoners they can find inside the institution. As they begin, the trio end up alerting Burning Rescue. Once everyone is rescued by the firefighters, Gueira and co. step in to force a fight between themselves and Galo. Despite Galo struggling with them at first, he and his team end up restraining all three Burnish until Freeze Force's arrival.

Gueira, alongside Lio and Meis, are later taken to a Burnish prison cell with block handcuffs. When Gueira gets upset later at Lio's expense, he is frozen by said cuffs. An elderly Burnish man explains this further. Gueira and Meis then direct Lio's attention to Thyma, who is laying on the floor wrapped in bandages.

Eventually, the Mad Burnish members are brought out of their cell. Lio then manages to free himself. Taking down two guards, he releases Gueira and Meis. The duo assist their leader with releasing fellow prisoners in a breakout. Gueira and Meis are aboard the helicopter.

During Galo and Lio's discussion in the cave, Gueira and Meis went out to find a truck for the group. They come back after Thyma's death.

Sometime after Galo's arrest, Freeze Force manages to track down the group to an abandoned complex next to a volcano. While Lio and his other Mad Burnish attempt to stop them, the previously mentioned elder reveals himself to be a traitor and places an ice bomb on Lio, causing him to be partially paralyzed from Vulcan's freezing bullet. With this, Guiera and Meis decide to sacrifice themselves by holding off Vulcan and his men as Lio is flung to Fennel Volcano.

For the rest of the movie, Gueira and Meis are one of several Burnish used as a fuel source for the Parnassus. They later assist Lio and Galo with saving the world. While the duo are not seen in the aftermath, it is confirmed they are still alive.

Relationships[]

Lio[]

After being rescued by Lio, him and Meis find themselves respecting him as their new leader. Both Gueira and Meis have a tendency to call Lio 'boss.' His high regard of Lio results in them agreeing to his prison scheme and even sacrificing himself for his sake. As both Gueira and Meis are willing enough to endanger themselves for him and both adorn tattoos of Japanese gods, this makes them his protectors according to Koyama[1].

Meis[]

Meis is a close comrade of Gueira's. They have worked together since long before the events of the movie, and have similarly style outfits and tattoos. They appear to always pair up for missions. Gueira wears a blue shirt, which matches Meis' Burnish armor, adorns a similar tattoo to his, and vice versa.

Thyma[]

After attacking one of Kray's pharmaceuticals, Thyma ends up turning into a Burnish, having Gueira and Meis take her away to prevent further action by Burning Rescue. They attempt to calm her down with her new fate as a Burnish and even offer to have her join them in Mad Burnish.

When they meet up again, they direct Lio's attention to her and help her escape from the institution.

Trivia[]

  • Gueira's Burnish armor has two horns, which indicates how powerful the Burnish is. For example, Meis' armor has one horn, and Lio's has three horns[2].
    • He is also bad at gacha games according to the same panel[2].
  • The only scene where his tattoo is shown is in Lio-hen, while listening to Lio's explanation.
  • His bike is named Miami.
  • As stated in a Geekboat talk event, Gueira has an interest in football. Despite his agility, he was physically unfit to join any teams from his weak constitution. This is why his Burnish armor is large in comparison to Lio and Meis[3].
  • According to Nakajima, Gueira can't eat hot food. He describes him as having a "whale tongue[4]."

Etymology[]

  • Staff claims Gueira's name came from Gerania. Gerania Mountain was where Megarus escaped to during a flood according to Greek Mythology[5][6].

Story Concepts[]

  • Concept art gives both him and Meis more gruff appearances. As Koyama would develop them, they would be given more 'ikemen' designs.
  • In an earlier draft, Gueira and Galo were to have met in jail from Gueira attempting assassination against Kray[7].

Miscellaneous[]

  • Gueira's Japanese voice actor, Nobuyuki Hiyama, has also voiced the following characters: Yu Yu Hakusho's Hiei, Adult Link in the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Viral from Gurren Lagann, Uzu Sanageyama from Kill la Kill, and Kasugaigarasu in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.
  • His English voice actor, Matthew Mercer, played Aikuro Mikisugi in Kill la Kill, Jotaro from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Kagaya of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Cor Leonis from Final Fantasy XV, and Cole Cassidy from Overwatch.
