The Deus X Machina is a super-weapon mecha created by Deus as a means to counteract Kray Foresight's plan to flee a doomed Earth using a warp gate via the promatech engine. It appears in Promare near the end, hence its name.

Appearance[]

Deus X Machina's original appearance features white and red metal adorned with orange-tinted glass. At the mecha's head is a pod for the Burnish co-pilot. When powered by said pilot, their flames can be seen filling the inside. Below the pod is a station for the other pilot. A vast array of buttons and levers can be found. Unlike it's later upgrades, it does not feature hands. Rather there are two cannons instead.

Lio de Galon[]

The Lio de Galon is an altered form of the Deus X Machina, created by Lio to appease Galo's desire for a "cooler" looking mech. This version features hands and horns as well as black armor similar to Mad Burnish's. Pink and blue segments can be seen representing the pilots. The chest bears a mouth-like appearance. Four separate horns are featured amongst the plating.

Galo de Lion[]

The new name given to the Deus X Machina during Lio and Galos' plan to "burn the planet to ashes." It is of a pure teal-white minus sequences of blue and pink, both colors representing Galo and Lio respectively. This particular mech, rather than being of metal or hard materials, appears to be made solely of Burnish flames with Galo and Lio in Deus X Machina as the base. In close-ups of the pilots, the duo occasionally seem to be fused together. It's size is enormous, being one fourth the size of Earth.

History[]

Before Promare[]

Before Deus' death at the hands of Kray, Deus began plans for a super weapon capable of defeating him. He would later continue said plans post-mortem whilst observing Promepolis. Using his research on the promatech engine, he incorporated both Burnish and non-Burnish mechanisms to allow for teamwork.

Promare[]

When Galo, Lio, and Aina discover Deus' lab, he invites them inside and explains his findings to the trio. When he finishes, he commands Galo and Lio to control Deus X Machina and stop Kray. The duo oblige. As they leave, Aina questions Deus on what he would of done had they not found him. He claims he would of done nothing and accepted the world's fate.

Galo and Lio talk

Back in the mech, Galo notes that Lio is more tense and conflicted from Deus' information. He attempts to ease him by claiming he should "uphold his Burnish pride." Lio agrees as they fly to where Kray's tower is.

At the tower, Kray is notified of an unidentified flying object. Said object is Deus X Machina. Kray and Biar command for it to be shot done. As they hit, it falls onto the Parnassus' surface. Inside, Lio questions Galo on his piloting skills who replies that he finds the machine to be "uncool." Lio decides to take his word and revamps the mech's appearance. Here, Galo decides to rename it to Lio de Galon.

Immediately after he announces its new name, shots are once again fired. However, they leave barely a scratch as the duo attack the tower before them. The scientists inside are sent flying. However, the duo quickly realizes that they need to find the Burnish themselves. Thus, they attempt to dig into the ship's metals.

Kray is left frustrated and decides to take matters into his own hands. As everyone else leaves, Kray converts the tower into a mech and attacks the duo, sending them into the city inside the Parnassus. A long fight breaks out with Kray seemingly winning. However, Galo claims the lack of a Matoi is what's preventing Kray's defeat. Lio once again listens and forms the tool. They then rally themselves up and fight Kray with it. Suddenly, Heris destroys the promatech engine, sending both mechs flying.

With one last push, Kray attempts to freeze the duo to death, resulting in one of Lio de Galon's hands tearing apart. Shots are suddenly fired from the cannons. Both mechs are left frozen in place, with only Galo freezing. After Kray reveals himself as Burnish and flings Galo's body away, he takes Lio and the core to where the promatech engine is.

When Galo saves Lio, they command the trapped Burnish to assist them. As they do so, a far larger mech composed of only flames and Deus X Machina is created. This is Galo de Lion as proclaimed by Lio. Galo de Lion uses its might to punch the Earth and submerge it entirely in teal flames. This allows for the Promare to leave Earth. The mecha then vanishes as well.

Abilities[]

Original abilities[]

  • Flight: Deus X Machina is shown launching after Deus' farewell.
  • Hand cannons: At the end of the mech's arms are two cannons instead. They are only used when Lio de Galon's hands break off.

Lio de Galon abilities[]

  • Grabbing and clinging: As this edition of Deus X Machina has hands, it is able to lift itself up, punch objects, or even grab. This is far more demonstrated in the fight with Krazor-X.
  • Kicking: Lio de Galon kicks into the ground at an attempt to break the Parnassus' surface open. It manages to make a large indent.
  • Regeneration: Lio can recreate broken pieces of armor so long as they are of his own creation.
  • Matoi Decked Out: At Galo's request, Lio ends up making a Matoi for him to use to both rally themselves up and fight with.

Galo de Lion abilities[]

  • World-shaking strength: With all the same abilities as Lio de Galon, Galo de Lion has the inclusion of having a massive amount of strength. In a single punch, several people are lifted into the air from its might. However, as teal flames were used, none were hurt.
  • Enormous size: Galo de Lion is larger than the Earth's continents, towering both the people and cities below. It's fist is able to take out the Parnassus in one punch.

Trivia[]

  • Kray is able to recognize the mecha when Galo and Lio arrive at the Parnassus. This implies he saw blueprints of the mech before Deus hid them away.
  • During the creation of Galo de Lion, a heart-shaped explosion can be seen.
    • Right before said explosion, flames are shown coming out of Lio's chest as he folds his arms, specifically his heart.
  • The amount of horns on a Burnish armor mech is an indication of the user's power as stated in a live panel. As later iterations of Deus X Machina depict the machine with four horns, this implies Galo and Lio to be stronger together[1].
  • According to the Hiroyuki Imaishi Anime Artworks collection, Deus X Machina in its Lio de Galon form is larger than the titular Gunmen from Gurren Lagann as well as the Ultimate Double Naked DTR from Kill la Kill[2][3].

Etymology[]

  • The name "Deus X Machina" is derived from deus ex machina, a story technique used to describe an unsolvable problem that's immediately solved without any foreshadowing.
    • Dr. Prometh's first name comes from this as well.

Intertextuality and References[]

  • Deus X Machina's design features a similar appearance to Baymax from the Disney movie Big Hero 6. Baymax was also designed by Koyama.
    • Galo finding the original mecha to be "uncool" is a play on this, joking about Koyama's round designs.
  • According to staff in a Twitch stream, Deus X Machina's later incarnation of Lio de Galon is based on Senketsu and the Kamui from Kill la Kill[4].
  • In the Spanish dub of Promare, Galo makes references to the series Sailor Moon in Lio de Galon's transformation, specifically the catchphrase of "In the name of the Moon, I'll punish you."
